The history of the word potluck has two different claims. The first is from the 1590’s in the UK to denote what travelers or unexpected guests were offered whatever was cooking that night without any special preparation. That was the “luck of the pot.” The visitor would “take a chance” at what was being served. The term has continued in communities and become popular during the depression. It has come to mean a casual supper often outdoors, picnic style, where everyone brings whatever is available from home to share.
Another theory entirely or more accurately an urban legend is that the term is derived from the Chinook word “potlatch” of the tribes of the northwestern US and Canada. But this meant a rather elaborate celebration, very different from the humble, but altogether delightful, potluck.
So, the Cannon Grange hosted its first potluck of 2023 on Saturday evening June 10th that was indeed delightful. Thirty people including children sampled the various ample and wide-ranging dishes.
It was a very pleasant evening with existing newer members, some veteran members, and some brand-new members. With many children, there were impromptu games set up on the pavement.
Toni Boucher, former State Senator, and veteran Wilton community leader commented how the interest in the Grange and an event such as this shows “a yearning for our rural roots and the special quality that draws people to our area.” She also commented that the Grange itself is an “iconic anchor of Wilton at the turn of the century” and an important reminder of our town story. Sara Curtis, member, and long-time resident of Cannondale enthusiastically called out the “free play” and “casual” atmosphere of the supper as a welcome respite in this time. We look forward to continuing this new-old tradition.
